SB: Wild Day for the Bison
It was a wild day for the Bethany College softball team as the team fell in extra innings and then overcame an eight-run first-inning deficit in an halted game.
GAME ONE: WAYNESBURG 4, BETHANY 2 (9 innings)
Waynesburg forced extra innings with a run in the seventh and then stole game one with three runs in the ninth inning.
Junior Brooke Markland was responsible for both Bethany runs, scoring on a wild pitch in the first inning and had an RBI double in the ninth inning. Trailing by two runs in the ninth inning, the Bison brought the tying run to the plate with no outs. However, a pair of strikeouts sandwiched a groundout.
Bethany had an opportunity to add to its 1-0 lead in the fourth inning as they loaded the bases with one out. A pop up and strikeout ended the threat.
Markland finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored, an RBI, and a pair of stolen bases. Freshman Olivia Kidd was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Fifth-year Josie Wise (12-3) allowed four earned runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts over nine innings.
GAME TWO: BETHANY 8, WAYNESBURG 8 (HALTED AFTER 7)
Bethany scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to knot the game at eight, and the game was halted due to darkness. The game will be resumed, if needed for PAC tournament seeding.
Things were looking bleak early for the Bison as Waynesburg scored all eight of its runs in the first inning. From there, Wise – who entered with just one out in the first inning – slammed the door on the Jackets.
A two-out infield single by junior Trista Morris scored Kidd, who opened the inning with a double. The hustle down the line preserved the inning for senior Haley Eyler, who took full advantage with a blast to centerfield to cut the deficit in half.
Three straight two-out singles, the latter by freshman Bella Jouzapaitis brought home Markland in the fifth inning to trim the deficit to three runs, and set up the seventh inning heroics.
Jouzapaitis and Markland were at it again to start the rally as the former singled home the latter. Much like the fourth inning, a hustle infield single by Morris kept the inning alive for Eyler. This time the senior singled home a pair of runs before darkness brought the game with an intermission.
