Volleyball claims sweep at Chatham, 3-0

PITTSBURGH (Sept. 20) – The Bethany College volleyball team earned a 3-0 win (25-22, 25-22, 25-23) over Chatham in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match Wednesday night inside Chatham's Athletics and Fitness Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Chatham held a 19-17 lead late in the first set, but the Bison rallied back with eight of the next 11 points, including a pair of kills by sophomore Lindsey Llewellyn (Vermillion, Ohio/Norwalk St. Paul), to claim a 25-22 win.
  • The Cougars appeared poised to even the match in the second set when they opened up a 19-15 lead. The Bison scored each of the next four points to tie the set up.
  • Chatham scored the next point to take a 20-19 lead, but Bethany notched six of the next eight points, including a kill by junior libero Reilly Parker (North Huntington, Pa./Norwin), to secure a 25-22 win and extend its lead to 2-0.
  • The Green & White controlled the majority of the third and final set after racing out to a 19-14 advantage.
  • Chatham pulled within two points at 21-19, but did not threaten any further, as Bethany claimed a 25-21 third set win to clinch the match.

MATCH NOTES

  • Senior Sumayyah Muhammad (Warren, Ohio/Warren G. Harding) led the offense with nine kills and added two assisted blocks defensively.
  • Llewellyn and sophomore Katie Sparks (Macedonia, Ohio/Trinity) each chipped in eight kills in the win, with Sparks also adding a pair of assisted blocks.
  • Freshman Jenna Scott (New Castle, Pa./Liberty Christian) was the driving force behind the offense once again, leading the team with 30 assists, including a season-best 10 assists per set.
  • Parker was one of three Bison with double-digit digs, finishing with a match-best 17 in the win.
