Bethany falls in home opener to Marietta, 7-2

BETHANY, W.Va. (March 6) - The Bethany College men's tennis team was knocked off 7-2 by Marietta in a non-conference tilt inside the TPJ Health and Recreation Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Bison battled in doubles play, but came up short in all three matchups to fall behind 3-0 heading into singles competition.
  • After dropping No. 3 singles, Bethany rallied back with wins at the top-two singles positions to make the score 3-2.
  • Senior Chris Ray (Henrico, Va./Mills E. Godwin) held off his opponent for a hard-fought 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6 tiebreaker) win at No. 1 singles.
  • Junior Drake Berlin (Washington Court House, Ohio/Washington) battled back to claim No. 2 singles. After dropping the first set 3-6, Berlin rallied to win 6-1 and 1-0 (10-4 tiebreaker) to bring the Bison within one point of the Pioneers in the team score.
  • The Bison were unable to get any closer, as Marietta won the final three singles positions to earn the non-conference win.

UP NEXT

  • The Bison will continue with non-conference play following spring break on Saturday, March 24 when they travel to Mount Vernon, Ohio to take on Mount Vernon Nazarene.
  • Bethany will follow-up with its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener at Thomas More on Sunday, March 25 at 12 p.m.
