Big Day for Braymer in Loss

The Bethany College volleyball team staved off three straight match points, but ultimately, the Bison fell to Waynesburg in five sets (21-25, 25-22, 25-17, 16-25, 19-17) in Presidents' Athletic Conference action inside Hummel Field House Wednesday.  

Bethany scored five of the first seven points in the final set to force a Waynesburg timeout. The Yellow Jackets pulled even on several occasions, however, the Bison scored four consecutive points to put them on the verge of victory, 14-13. 

Waynesburg responded with back-to-back points to put it on the cusp of the win. Bethany fought off three consecutive match points before an attack error and service ace brought the match to an end.  

The Bison scored six of the last seven points to claim the opening set, then dropped back-to-back sets. Bethany nearly led the fourth set from start to finish in forcing the fifth set.  

Three different players finished with double-figure kills with junior Averie Braymer as the most dangerous attacker with 13 kills on 36 attempts and just two errors. She added two solo blocks and five block assists  

Freshman Mykah Hettinger got off to a fast start and finished with a team-high 14 kills on 52 attempts. Junior Adriana Gilliam added 10 kills.  

Senior Talia Gallagher recorded her 14t double-double of the season with 43 digs and 23 assists. Senior Anna Taylor led a quintet of Bison with double-figure digs. Taylor finished 39 digs, followed by Gallagher (23), Gilliam (22), junior JaSona Belyeu (15) and junior Andie Clark (11).  

INSIDE THE BOX & NOTES 

  • Braymer has recorded at least one block in seven consecutive matches. She has nine matches with double-digit kills.  

  • Gilliam now has eight double-doubles this season.  

  • Taylor recorded a career-high six service aces.  

Bethany (7-16 overall, 0-5 PAC) travels to Thiel 11 a.m. Saturday for another PAC match.
