Women's Basketball Battles with Waynesburg

Bethany, W. Va – The Bethany College women's basketball team battled with the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets inside Hummel Field House, Wednesday evening to close out the first half of PAC conference play. A late surge boosted Waynesburg past Bethany, 74-73. Sophomore Courtney Walker led the Bison with a career-high 32 points. Freshman Abbey Dobbins added a career-high 22 points for the Green and White.  

GAME OVERVIEW

Bethany jumped out to a quick lead in the first quarter, scoring the first seven points of the game. Courtney Walker paced the Bison with 11 points in the first stanza. The Green and White held the Yellow Jackets to just five field goals but allowed the Yellow Jackets to hit the charity stripe to get four freebies. The Green and White shot a hot 64.7 percent from the field to take a 24-15 lead going into the second.

Sophomore Walker continued to have a game adding another 12 points for the Green and White in the second quarter. The Bison continued to build the lead going up by as many as 16. Waynesburg tried to cut the lead before the break getting within 12 off of a jumper with under a minute to go. The Bison answered with a layup as time expired from Alexis Heap. The Green and White led 42-28.

Out of the break Waynesburg came out battling.  The Yellow Jackets cut the lead to single digits. Bethany held onto a narrow lead in the final minutes before a late surge from the Bison. The Green and White led, 54-48 going into the final stanza.

The Bison kept scrapping to keep the lead. An Abbey Dobbins layup opened up the final quarter. Dobbins scored 14 of her 22 points in the second half. Waynesburg knotted the game at 64-64 with under five minutes to go, but the Bison took the lead back after a Haylie Glass layup. However the Yellow Jackets had an answer of their own to gain the lead. The Bison didn't give up, battling to keep the lead close in the final minute. After a pair of free throws from Glass, the Bison trailed by one, coming up short on the win.
