Softball: Offensive explosion powers Bison to two wins

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Bethany College earned two wins in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic Sunday afternoon. The Bison defeated Anna Maria in five innings, 8-0 and defeated Potsdam 10-3.

Game One Overview

Bethany 8, Anna Maria 0 (5 inn.)  

Bethany's offense exploded for eight runs in the first inning. Back-to-back hits by Destiny Goodnight and Morgan Huey put runners on first and third. Goodnight scored on a stolen base. Haley Eyler doubled to drive in Huey. Mary Marshall would drive in both Brooke Markland and Eyler to give the Bison a 4-0 lead. Elizabeth Shubert would double, and after an error both Alexis Holden and Marshall would score. The Bison batted through the lineup, bringing Goodnight up again. She would reach base and later score on another Huey stolen base.

The defense would hold on and pitcher Katelyn Ziems would earn the victory. She pitched a perfect game up until the fourth inning. Ziems pitched 4.0 innings with three strikeouts. Isabella Belcher pitched 1.0 innings with one strikeout for the Bison.

Game Two Overview

Bethany 10, Potsdam 3

Bethany's offense got started early in game two. Mary Marshall tripled to center field to drive in three runs. Marshall later scored along with Elizabeth Shubert on a Trista Morris single. After the first inning, the Bison led 5-0. Bethany added another run in the second on a Haley Eyler sacrifice fly that drove in Destiny Goodnight.

Potsdam put a run on the board in the bottom of the fourth. The Bison were able to add a few insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings. In the seventh, the Bison scored three runs to take a 10-3 lead.
