Softball: Bison Swept by Geneva at Home

BETHANY- The Bison hosted a doubleheader against the Geneva Golden Tornadoes. This series was pivotal for the soon to come Presidents Athletic Conference postseason tournament entering the day as six teams were within one sweep away from possibly falling out of the playoff picture.

THE BASICS

Final Scores:

Game One: Geneva 6, Bethany 3

Game Two: Geneva 3, Bethany 2

Records:

  • Geneva (19-13, 11-5 PAC)

  • Bethany (24-9, 10-8 PAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME ONE)

  • Geneva was on a four game win streak entering Bison Field, and their bats showed it early. A leadoff double and stolen base was cashed in on a sacrifice fly. Then another run was scored from an RBI single to give the Golden Tornadoes a two run lead before the Bison even got the chance to bat.

  • Geneva extended their lead in the top of the third. They lead off the inning with a single then a double to put two runners in scoring position with no outs. While the Golden Tornadoes didn't get another hit, they traded outs for runs to go up 4-0.

  • Bethany had an opportunity to make some waves at the plate with two outs in the bottom of the inning. Although Mary Marshall collected her 30th RBI of the season, the Bison left her and another stranded in scoring position, making it a 5-1 game.

  • Bethany found themselves in another great spot in the bottom of the fifth down 5-2. They already scored a run and had the bases loaded. However, the bases were left loaded as the third out was recorded.

  • The runners left on base proved to be costly as the Bison didn't get another opportunity to catch up to Geneva's lead.

BISON LEADERS IN GAME ONE:

  • Marshall and Angela Brandel both recorded a hit and an RBI.

  • Morgan Huey was 2-3 with a pair of doubles, a walk, and an RBI.

  • Katelyn Ziems came in relief throwing 2.2 innings without giving up an earned run. She had five strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME TWO):

  • Ziems stayed on the mound throwing the second game for the Bison. She completed seven solid innings giving up five hits, two walks, and one earned runs.

  • Geneva continued to start fast as they scored twice in the first inning. One from an error, another from a single.

  • The Bison were able to get one back in the bottom of the inning.  Destiny Goodnight singled and found herself at third base with one out. Marshall walked and stole second which drew a throw. Goodnight saw an opportunity and executed a delayed double steal to give Bethany their first run of the day.

  • Errors continued to hurt the Bison as they gave up another unearned run in the fourth inning.

  • Bethany strung together two singles in the fifth inning to score another run making it a 3-2 game.

  • They had an opportunity to tie it in the following inning, but the Bison were unable to push home a runner in scoring position with less than two outs.

BISON LEADERS IN GAME TWO:

  • Marshall had the only RBI going 1-3 with a walk.

  • She also drew the throw allowing Goodnight to steal home.

  • Brandel was 2-3 with a run scored.

  • Eyler had the only XBH going 2-3 with a double.

WHAT'S NEXT?

Bethany will travel to Bexley, Ohio to take on Capital University. This is set to be their final non-conference doubleheader of the season. The games will begin at 3PM.
