Women's Lacrosse: Defensive miscues hurt Bison in loss to Cougars

Drew VonScio, Student Assistant for Athletic Communications

DANVILLE, Va. – Bethany looked to end their road trip to Virginia on a positive note this afternoon when they squared off against Averett at Campbell Stadium. Despite five different Bison hitting the back of the net, it was not nearly enough as they fell 21-5.

The Green and White struck first just 41 seconds into the first quarter when Karley Trinidad netted her sixth goal of the season; Alexa Taylor tacked on her second assist of the campaign. The Bethany advantage was quickly doubled with just over 10 minutes left in the frame when Gracie Gonzales scored her first goal of the season on a free position shot. The game flipped on its head just 48 seconds later when Averett got a goal back that quickly opened the flood gates as the Cougars would finish the first 15 minutes of play with a 5-2 lead.

As the second quarter began, Bethany looked to establish some momentum again, but that was quickly erased just over a minute in as the hosts again found the net. Things would become dreary for the Bison as this was the first of eight Cougar goals. The Green and White would be blanked and not be able to strike back as they trailed 13-2 at halftime.

Coincidentally, the third quarter played out exactly as the first frame of action did. Looking to prove a point, the Green and White posted the first two tallies of the third quarter. Cassidy Mailloux got it started with her 14th goal while Lexie Reid added her third goal of the season less than two minutes later. Averett pounced yet again tacking on five more to further extend the advantage to 18-4 after 45 minutes of play.

Joanna Melita scored her third goal of the season from a free position shot to start the final 15 minutes of play before the Cougars put up three more for good measure.

Madi Wagoner produced six saves for the Bison while suffering the loss. Leah Crihfield added one save in relief during the fourth quarter. The Green and White are back at it on Saturday, March 18 at Don Ault Field against Mt. St. Joseph for a 1 p.m. start.
