Bison Draw Tie In Close Match with Muskingum

Sept. 11 - BETHANY, W. Va. - The Bethany College men's soccer team tied Muskingum 1-1 in double-overtime in the final game of the Fuzzy Williams Tournament.

Much like on Saturday, the Bison started with a quick and fast offensive attack. Within the first four minutes, the Bison tallied two shots.

The closest the hosts came in the period came in the 41st minute when freshman Anthony Bradden (Melbourne, Fla./Viera) found himself in a crowd in front of the net and tried to drop one over the goalie's head but it just went wide.

Throughout the entire first half, Muskingum was called for being offsides seven times, giving the Bison momentum, but they weren't able to find the back of the net.

In the first five minutes of the second half, sophomore Kai Whitney (Melbourne, Fla./Eau Gallie) was looking to net the advantage but missed just left in front of the net.

Later in the 65th minutes, senior Jack Waters (Epsom, United Kingdom) saw another opportunity right in front of the net but the goalie's pressure rushed his shot left.

It was until the 76th minute when junior Adam Franco (Inglewood, Ca./Carter) found sophomore Jay O'Donnell from the left 6-yard box. O'Donnell composed himself and ripped the shot top left corner for his first goal of the year to put the Bison up 1-0.

However, Muskingum would net the equalizer just three minutes later on a Zach Smauch goal on a fast-break chance.

With just under three minutes to go, Jose Saldivar (Moreno Valley, Ca./Valley View) headed a Waters corner kick that rung off the post, just missing giving the Bison the late lead.

The Bison kept up the offensive pressure in the first overtime. Just over a minute in, Waters received a pass from deep downfield on the left side, and his shot bounced off the right post, just missing the winner.

After several close chances on both sides, no winner was decided in the first OT.

In the second OT period, Muskingum had a chance to score off a header from a corner kick but the shot flew wide. That was the closest either side came to taking the match in the final period.

In the tie, Bethany registered 26 shots to Muskingum's 11. Waters and Whitney each tallied three shots-on-goal. In goal for Bethany, senior Callum Appleby (Maidstone, United Kingdom/Maidstone) made three saves.

Next up for Bethany is La Roche on Friday, September 16 in a home match slated for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
