Bison edged in double-overtime by Grove City, 3-2

Oct. 8 - Bethany, W.Va. - A goal in the 110th minute of the match was the difference, as the Bison were clipped 3-2 by Grove City Saturday afternoon at Hoag Field on Homecoming.

The loss drops the Bethany College men's soccer team to 5-6-2 overall, 1-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC). Meanwhile, the Wolverines improve to 2-1 in league play, 10-3 overall this season.

The early minutes of the first half saw lots of physical play, with both sides getting shots off with nothing to show.

In the 43nd minute Jose Arzate (Waller, Texas/Waller) caught a rebound off of a shot from senior Jack Waters (Epsom, United Kingdom/Glyn) and capitalized to give the Bison the 1-0 lead going into the break.

Grove City tied it up in the in the 73rd minute with a set piece into the box and took the lead in the 86th minute on an unassisted goal.

Bethany responded quickly with a marker of its own barely three minutes later. Freshman Baboucar Sallah-Mohammed (Arlington, Va./Fishburne)attempted a shot that bounced off of the right post and into the back of the net to even the game at 2-2 in the final moments of regulation, sending the match into an extra session.

After neither team connected on a winning goal in the first overtime period, the Wolverines netted the golden-goal with 16 seconds on the clock until the final whistle. Grove City was granted a direct-kick from near midfield and Wolverine Joe DeAugustino dropped a ball just over the reach of senior goaltender Callum Appleby (Maidstone, United Kingdom/Maidstone) to give the Bison the loss.

Appleby made four saves in the loss to lead the Bison defense.

Bethany returns to the pitch at Hoag Field on Tuesday, October 11 when they host Saint Vincent for a PAC match at 3:30 p.m.
