BB: Black with Career-High Four Hits

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Senior Derek Black had a career-high four hits, but the Bethany College baseball team opened the season with an 18-6 non-conference loss to Pitt.-Bradford at John Critchfield Park on the campus of Slippery Rock University.

Black was one of three Bison with multi-hit games as graduate Josh Speaker and junior Sonny Peluchette had two hits each.

After taking the lead with a double steal in the bottom of the second inning, the Bison saw Pitt.-Bradford tally 10 unanswered runs, one in the third, four in the fourth, and five in the sixth. Bethany had a chance to trim its deficit in the sixth inning as the Bison loaded the bases with no outs. Unfortunately, three consecutive strikeouts ended the threat.

For the second straight inning, the Bison loaded the bases with no out. This time, it turned out more fruitful. Junior Jaden Nestor-Fox brought home a run on catcher's interference, then Grant Schaffner double home two runs with one out, and Gian DeGenova capped the scoring with an RBI groundout.

But the Panthers scored four runs in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively.

Graduate Trey Mantle (0-1) was superb through three innings, allowing just two hits with six strikeouts. But ran into trouble in the fourth, yielding three hits and four of his five earned runs. His final line was five earned runs on five hits in three innings of work with six strikeouts.
