Phillips Accounts for 478 Yards in Loss
Freshman quarterback Brett Phillips was responsible for 478 yards of total offense, but Bethany only scored once in four red zone attempts in falling to Geneva, 34-27, Saturday in Presidents' Athletic Conference on Don Ault Field at Bison Stadium.
Phillips was 17-of-30 for 361 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. He added 117 yards on 15 attempts.
Bethany opened the scoring on their first play as Phillips connected with junior Elijah Moffatt for a 75-yard catch and run as the Bison took the early lead. After Geneva connected on a 72-yard pass of its own to claim the 7-6 lead, Phillips had the Bison back in scoring position after a 35-yard run down to the five. However, following a defensive pass interference call, Bethany came up empty on four attempts from the one-yard line.
Geneva took advantage of a Bison fumble and went to 52 yards on 12 plays for the score.
Phillips was back at it again as his 29-yard touchdown pass to Ray Adames pulled Bethany to within one. The Golden Tornados scored on its ensuing possession, but the extra point was blocked and BC trailed by just seven.
The Bison knotted the game with a 10-play, 85-yard drive capped with a nine-yard touchdown pass to Gerrel Leeper on fourth down with five seconds remaining.
Geneva scored on its first two possessions of the second half, sandwiched by a Bethany score, to secure the win.
Moffatt had a career day with 198 yards receiving on just four catches and two touchdowns. Freshman Jacob Burns also hauled in a career-high with 78 yards on four receptions.
Junior Sonny Fox finished with 15 tackles, while senior Amarion Williams added 13 tackles and a half tackle for loss.
