
Football Snaps Losing Skid
LATROBE, Pa. - The Bethany College football team scored a touchdown in each of the last three quarters as the Bison snapped a 27-game losing streak with a 21-13 win over Saint Vincent Saturday on Chuck Noll Field.
Freshman Brett Phillips shook off an interception in the endzone on Bethany's first drive to throw for 284 yards on 19-of-34 passing with three touchdowns. He added 44 yards on 12 carries in the victory.
The gunslinger connected with classmate Ray Adames early in the third quarter with an 81-yard catch and run to give the Bison a lead they wouldn't relinquish, 14-13. Phillips created more magic late with a shade over over two minutes remaining as he connected with junior Elijah Moffatt from 14-yards out on fourth down to push the Bison lead to eight.
The defense secured the win as sophomore Dave Rene broke up a pass in the end zone.
Saint Vincent took its second drive of the game 80 yards on six plays, capped by a two-yard run to take the lead. Bethany had an immediate answer.
The Bison matriculated 80 yards on 16 plays, chewing up 8:31, as Phillips connected with Moffatt for the six-yard touchdown. Bethany converted three third downs and a fourth down on the scoring drive.
With a pair of second-quarter field goals, the Bearcats took the 13-7 lead into halftime.
Adames hauled in 136 yards on seven catches with one touchdown, while both of Moffatt's catches went for touchdowns.
Defensively, Sonny Fox had 16 tackles with one sack and a forced fumble, while senior Amarion Williams seven tackles with 3.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. Rene had his first interception of the season.
Bethany (1-8) returns home for the season finale, hosting Thiel 1 p.m. Saturday.
