Women's Basketball: Turnovers and cold shooting plague Bison in loss to Cougars

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Bethany College women's basketball team was plagued by cold shooting and the turnover bug in a 92-48 loss to Chatham University, Saturday afternoon.

GAME FLOW

  • Turnovers plagued the first quarter with both teams combining for 19 turnovers. The Bison's first and only basket of the quarter came at the 6:18 mark from a Alexis Heap layup. Fortunately for the Bison, the Cougars only shot 6-for-18 from the field to keep the game within 10 points.
  • The Bison trailed 13-3 after the first stanza.
  • Bethany's offense saw the first two possessions end in buckets after Sophie Morey scored on a layup and Ashleigh Wheeler hit a three-pointer.  Wheeler cut the deficit to under ten after a layup, 18-10. Chatham's defense settled back in and stalled the Bison's offense, while the Cougar offense exploded their lead and ending the quarter on a 21-4 run.
  • Chatham led 39-14 heading into the halftime break.
  • In the third quarter, Chatham continued their hot shooting, to extend the lead further. The Cougars held the Bison to just 15 points and shot 10-for-20 from the field and 6-for-12 from behind the arc.
  • The Bison strung together a few runs in the fourth but Chatham continued to answer and outscored Bethany 24-19 in the final stanza.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Chatham shot a hot 49.3 percent (35-for-71) from the field and 42.5 percent from behind the arc. The Cougars knocked in 17 three-pointers.
  • The Bison shot 30.0 percent (15-for-50) from the field and 30.0 percent from behind the arc. The Bison had six three's.
  • The Cougars outrebounded the Bison 46-33 and forced 24 Bison turnovers. While the Cougars had 8 turnovers in the first stanza, they settled down and ended the game with 13 total turnovers.
