Women's Basketball: Slow start dooms Bison in loss to Titans

BETHANY, W.Va. – The Bethany College women's basketball team fell 54-40 to the Westminster College Titans in a Presidents' Athletic Conference matchup on Joe Kurey Court in Hummel Field House Tuesday afternoon.   

GAME FLOW

  • Bethany opened the first stanza with a layup from Sophie Morey and a three-pointer from Makenzee Mason to take an early 5-0 lead with 8:55 to go. The Bison would then be held scoreless until Mason hit a layup at the 3:10 mark of the first quarter. The Titans would go on a 10-0 run during the Bison drought. The Titans led 15-8 after the first stanza.
  • In the second quarter, Bella Skobel hit a three to cut the deficit to 15-11. The three would be the only field goal and points by the Bison in the quarter. Westminster led 25-11 at the half.
  • Westminster led by as many as 16 in the third quarter. The Bison used an 8-2 scoring run at the end of the stanza to trail, 40-30.
  • In the fourth quarter, the Titans went on a 10-0 run to extend the lead to 20. The Bison slowly chipped away at the lead, going on a mini run of their own fueled by two Mason three-pointers and a layup by Samaria Murry. With 3:10 to go the Bison trailed 51-38.
  • The Bison were able to hold the Titans to just three points over the last three minutes but were unable to convert on shots of their own.

IN THE BOX SCORE

  • Junior Makenzee Mason led the Bison with 16 points, shooting 4-for-10 from behind the arc and 6-for-14 from the field. She pulled in two rebounds and had two steals.  
  • Senior Alexis Heap pulled in a team-high seven rebounds and had three blocks.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Titans shot 38.2% (21-for-55) from the field while the Bison shot 26.3% (15-for-57).
  • Bethany was outrebounded 40-30.

Bethany will travel to Juniata College for a non-conference tilt before the Christmas break on Saturday, December 17 for a 2 pm tip-off.
