Women's Basketball: Bison Fall Short to Wolverines

BETHANY, W.Va. – The Grove City Wolverines used a late 12-3 run to defeat the Bethany College women's basketball team, 73-67 inside Hummel Field House Wednesday evening. Junior Makenzee Mason led the Bison with 23 points.  

GAME FLOW

  • The Bison jumped out to a 6-2 lead to open the first quarter of play. The Wolverines battled back to knot the game at 10-10 with 5:20 to go. Ashleigh Wheeler put the Bison back ahead 13-10 from a shot behind the arc. At the 3:57 mark, the Wolverines pulled ahead 15-13 and held an 18-17 lead after one.
  • Makenzee Mason regained the Bison lead in the Bison's first possession of the second quarter, 20-18. Back-to-back layups extended the lead to 24-18. For much of the second stanza, the Bison maintained a shallow lead until the 1:23 mark where Grove City climbed back to take the lead, 31-30. The Wolverine lead was short lived as back-to-back layups by Makenzee Mason and Alyssa Serensky gave the Bison a 34-31 lead at the halftime break.
  • Freshman Taylor Dusenberry opened the second half with a three-pointer extending the lead to 37-31. A steal by Mason led to an Alexis Heap layup to force a Grove City time out after the Bison took a 39-31 lead. After the time out the Wolverines regained their composure and cut the deficit to 39-35. The Green and White led 50-43 with under three-minutes to go in the third quarter. The Wolverines used a small run to take a 52-50 lead heading into the final quarter of play.
  • In the fourth quarter, Makenzee Mason nailed a shot from behind the arc to give the Bison back the lead, 53-52. Grove City used another run to go ahead 61-54 but the stampeded back to lead 62-61 with 3:49 to go. Unfortunately for the Bison, they saw their lead dwindle as Grove City stormed back and used a 12-3 run to close out the final stanza.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Wolverines outrebounded the Bison 42-28 and had 15 second chance points.
  • The Bison held the Wolverines scoreless from behind the arc while hitting six three's.
  • Bethany shot 44.0 percent (22-for-50) from the field but were held to 63.0 percent (17-for-27) from the charity stripe.
