Bethany Women’s Soccer Falls 2-1 at Defiance

Sept. 12 – DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Bethany College women's soccer team fell to Defiance College 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.

The Bison (2-2) jumped out to a 1-0 lead after junior Julie Slezak (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) finished off a pass from teammate Michaela Hinerman (Weirton, W. Va./Brooke) in the 1st minute of play.

Bethany College continued to keep Defiance (1-3) at bay, and the score remained 1-0 at the intermission. The Bison outshot the Yellow Jackets 11-10 in the first period.

Defiance came out determined in the second half and quickly tied the game on a score from Kassie Memmer in the 48th minute.

With the game deadlocked at 1-1, the Yellow Jackets continued to put the pressure on the Bison defense. Defiance was finally able to capitalize in the 77th minute as Memmer tallied her second goal to make it a 2-1 game.

Bethany was unable to regroup and saw a game that they held the lead for the entire first half slip out of their grasps.

The Bison were led offensively by Hinerman who amassed six shots, including five shots on goal. Junior Brittany Fullbright (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) totaled three shots as well.

Yellow Jackets goalkeeper June Delgreco was able to slow the Bison attack down early, recording six saves in the first half. Delgreco finished with eight saves in the game.

Bethany keeper Taylor Sasak (Berea, Ohio/Berea) continued her streak of totaling double-digit saves to four straight games.

The Bison will return to the pitch on Monday, September 14 as they take on Franciscan at Bison Stadium at 7:00 p.m.
