Women's soccer drops match to Pitt.-Greensburg, 1-0

BETHANY, W.Va. (Sept. 8) - The Bethany College women's soccer team was defeated 1-0 by Pitt.-Greensburg on the first day of the Fuzzy Williams Memorial Classic at Hoag Field Friday evening.

THE MATCHUP

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Both teams were feeling each other out in the early portion of the game. The two squads combined for only three shot attempts through the opening 38 minutes of the contest.
  • Pitt.-Greensburg began to assert themselves in the offensive zone towards the end of the first half. The Bobcats attempted four corner kicks in the final eight minutes of the opening period, including one which led to a goal.
  • The Bobcats notched the eventual game-winning goal in the 41st-minute on a strike by Kiara Devore. Devore collected a clear attempt off of a corner kick from about 30 yards out and fired the ball low and on net through a screen that beat Bison freshman goalkeeper Maria Concha Vazquez (Queretaro, Mexico/Thomas Jefferson).
  • The Bison had a couple of scoring oppertunites in the second half, including in the final moments of the match.
  • Sophomore Kadin Gould (Huntington, W.Va/St. Joseph) put a shot on net near the 90th-minute, before freshman Riley Meyers (Dubois, Pa./Dubois Central Catholic) rang one off of the post in the final 10 seconds of the match.

MATCH NOTES

  • Concha Vazquez ended the match with five saves in the loss.
  • Pitt.-Greensburg held an 11-to-7 advantage in shots and a 9-to-3 edge in corner kicks.

  • The Bison are back on Hoag Field on Sunday, September 10 to host Wilson College to wrap up the annual Fuzzy Williams Memorial Tournament at 1:30 p.m.
