BETHANY, W.Va. (Sept. 26) - A goal in the 11th-minute by freshman Riley Meyers (Dubois, Pa./Dubois Central Catholic) propelled the Bison to a 1-0 win over Mount Aloysius Tuesday night at Bison Stadium in a non-conference match.

THE MATCHUP

  • Final: Bethany 1, Mount Aloysius 0 (Box Score)
  • Records: Bethany 2-7, Mount Aloysius 6-3-1
  • Location: Bison Stadium | Bethany, West Virginia

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Bison were the beneficiaries of a fortuitous bounce in the 11th-minute to spring Meyers for a breakaway goal to take the lead. A clear attempt from midfield was mishandled by the Mountie defense and headed back towards their own net.
  • Meyers sprinted through the back line and fired a shot past the goalkeeper to put Bethany ahead 1-0 early in the match.
  • Mount Aloysius went on to out-shoot the Bison 5-to-4 in the first half, but freshman goalkeeper Maria Concha Vazquez (Queretaro, Mexico/Thomas Jefferson) made a pair of saves to keep Bethany ahead 1-0 heading into halftime.
  • Mount Aloysius had its best opportunity to knot the match up in the 70th-minute of the match, when a ball was shot off of the crossbar and fell straight down towards the hands of Concha Vazquez.
  • Bethany applied pressure of its own in the 79th-minute when they had a pair of empty corner kick opportunities from shots that went wide of the goal.
  • A final scramble occurred at the end of the game when Mount Aloysius took a shot towards an empty goal, but a Bethany player headed the ball away from the net. The ensuing corner kick was unsuccessful, allowing the Bison to hold on for their second win this season.

MATCH NOTES

  • Vazquez earned her second shutout-win in net this season for the Bison after posting four saves.
  • Meyers' goal was her team-leading fifth of the season. No single-player on Bethany scored more than two goals last season.
