BETHANY, W.Va. (Oct. 11) - A goal in the 81st-minute by freshman Gabby Capaldi (Steubenville, Ohio/Catholic Central) lifted the Bison to a 1-0 win over Waynesburg Wednesday evening at Hoag Field in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match.

THE MATCHUP

  • Final: Bethany 1, Waynesburg 0 (Box Score)
  • Records: Bethany 5-9, 3-1 PAC | Waynesburg 5-6-1, 1-3 PAC
  • Location: Bison Stadium | Bethany, West Virginia

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Bethany and Waynesburg played to a scoreless tie in the first half. Waynesburg held a 9-to-3 advantage in shots, but only three Yellow Jacket shots were put on goal. None were a serious threat to freshman goalkeeper Maria Concha Vazquez (Queretaro, Mexico/Thomas Jefferson), who stopped all three.
  • Bethany switched goalies to start the second half, placing senior Anna Riddle (Mount Pleasent, Pa./Mount Pleasent) between the pipes. The swap allowed Concha Vazquez move into the field.
  • Riddle was tested early in the second half when she needed to make a sliding save less than two minutes into the period that kept the game scoreless.
  • Waynesburg appeared to break through with a goal in the 70th-minute, but an offside flag was raised by the linesman, nullifying the goal to keep the match tied.
  • Bethany had its best scoring chance at the time in the 80th minute when freshman Riley Meyers (Dubois, Pa./Dubois Central Catholic) rang a shot off of the crossbar. The ball rebounded out to Concha Vazquez, who sailed a shot high.
  • A foul on Waynesburg in the 81st-minute just outside of the box allowed junior Lindsey Cornish (McKeesport, Pa./South Allegheny) to attempt a free kick. Cornish shot the ball left-to-right across the box to the far right post, where Capaldi managed to head the ball past the Waynesburg goalkeeper to put Bethany ahead 1-0.
  • The Bison went into a shell defensively and kept the ball away from Riddle. Bethany held the Yellow Jackets without a shot over the final nine minutes of the match to secure their third victory in PAC play this season.

  • Waynesburg out-shot the Bison 19-to-7 for the match, including a 9-to-2 advantage in shots-on-goal.
