Last minute goal lifts Hiram over Bethany, 1-0

BETHANY, W.Va. (Sept. 15) - A goal with one minute remaining in regulation by Hiram sent the Bethany College women's soccer team to a 1-0 loss Friday night in non-conference play at Bison Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Hiram held the upper hand in the first half of play, out-shooting the Bison 8-to-2, including a shot on net in the 41st-minute that forced a save from Freshman goalkeeper Maria Concha Vazquez (Queretaro, Mexico/Thomas Jefferson).
  • Neither team had many scoring chances in the second half until late in the period.
  • Freshman Gabby Capaldi (Steubenville, Ohio/Steubenville Catholic Central) attempted a direct kick from about 30 yards out that sailed just high of the crossbar in the 87th-minute.
  • Moments later, Hiram execucted a counter-attack that resulted in a goal just as the clock reached the final minute of the match.

MATCH NOTES

  • Concha Vazquez finished the match with five saves.
  • Bethany was out-shot 14-to-5 for the game and 6-to-1 in shots-on-goal.
