PSU-Altoona sneaks past Bison, 2-1

ALTOONA, Pa. (Sept. 20) - The Bethany College women's soccer team was defeated 2-1 by Penn State-Altoona in a non-conference match on Wednesday evening at Spring Run Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The opening period of the match saw 13 combined shot attempts, zero corner kick attempts and a scoreless tie at the half.
  • Penn State-Altoona had the initial surge in the second half. The Lions attempted a shot and had a corner kick in the opening six minutes, but did not score.
  • Bethany broke the scoreless match late in the 59th-minute. Freshman Maria Concha Vazquez, making her debut in the field, put a shot on net that redirected to the foot of classmate Riley Meyers (Dubois, Pa./Dubois Central Catholic). Meyers fired the ball past the Altoona goalkeeper to the right side, giving the Bison a 1-0 lead.
  • The Lions responded eight minutes later in the 67th-minute by taking advantage of a Bethany foul that resulted in a direct kick attempt. Despite the effort of senior goalkeeper Anna Riddle (Mount Pleasent, Pa./Mount Pleasent) who made a play on the ball, she could not keep Altoona from knotting the match up.
  • Altoona kept the pressure on with four shots on goal in the next four minutes, but Riddle stopped each attempt to keep the game tied.
  • The Lions managed to break the tie in the 82nd-minute with a goal from about 10 yards out and went on to earn a one-goal non-conference win.

MATCH NOTES

  • Riddle finished the match with 14 saves, including 10 in the second half. Riddle was making her first start in net this season.
  • Altoona held a 24-to-8 edge for the game in shots-on-goal, including a 16-to-5 advantage in shots-on-goal.
