Baseball: D’Angela’s career-high strikeouts sees Bison past Defenders

Drew VonScio, Student Assistant for Athletic Communications

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Bethany opened their spring break trip this morning bright and early when they squared off against Clarks Summit. Led by Kyle D'Angela's 10 strikeouts and first career win, the Green and White cruised to an 11-2 victory.

After two innings of scoreless baseball, Bethany struck first in the bottom of the third when Nick Roell scored on a passed ball. The lead was quickly erased when the Defenders plated two just half an inning later on a triple to left-center field.

The Bison knew this game was there for the taking and went on to post a whopping six runs in the bottom of the fourth. JT Hubert got the party started with a single to bring in Alec Berg. Roell then reached on an infield single which allowed Hubert to score. Colton Stoneman continued his electric start to the season with a triple to right that led to Roell and Newman crossing the plate before Luke Beatty's double to left resulted in CJ Owens being the sixth and final run of the inning.

Bethany would add four more over their final two opportunities at bat, starting in the seventh inning when Josh Speaker tacked on an RBI courtesy of a sacrifice fly that scored Beatty. Payton Zupko later stole home when Hubert advanced to second.

In the eighth inning, Jake McGlumphy drove in Roell on a sacrifice fly before Logan Bennett doubled to left field and drove in Owens for the 11th and final run of the game.

Zach Nolf and Christian Simmons pitched the final three innings in relief of D'Angela as they faced the minimum number of batters in the final third of the game. Nolf struck out a pair in as many innings while Simmons fanned the final batter he faced for the Green and White.

The Bison continue to run rampant on the bases as they picked up five more stolen bases this morning in the win. Hubert swiped three bags while Zupko and Newman each added one.

Bethany returns to the diamond tomorrow night at 6:30 p.m. when they take on Delaware Valley. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
