Baseball: Bison celebrate senior day; fall to Golden Tornadoes

BETHANY, W.Va. – The Bethany College baseball team celebrated senior day in between their doubleheader versus the Geneva College Golden Tornadoes. The Bison held the lead late in both games but would fall 12-9 and 7-5 to the Golden Tornadoes.

Game One Overview

Geneva 12, Bethany 9  

Geneva led 4-0 threw three innings. The Bison were able to cross the plate in the bottom of the fourth, when Nick Roell grounded out to second base allowing Colton Stoneman to score. The Golden Tornadoes extended their lead to 8-1 in the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Bison exploded for eight runs on five hits to take the lead away from the Golden Tornadoes. The scoring began with a bases loaded single by Josh Speaker that scored Stoneman. Alec Berg walked moments later, which allowed Nick Roell to cross the plate. Back-to-back singles from Riley Brendel and Cory Newman allowed two more Bison to cross the plate. The Bison would add four more runs before the inning would end.

In the eighth, the Golden Tornadoes would knot the game at 9-9 and would take the lead in the top of the ninth to spoil the Bison comeback.

Game Two Overview

Geneva 7, Bethany 5

The Bison took an early, 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first after Nick Roell singled driving in Colton Stoneman and Derek Black. The Golden Tornadoes scored three in the fourth to take the lead away from the Bison. The Green and White weren't behind very long. Devin Toothman hit a homerun to deep left field to knot the game at 3-3. In the fifth, Josh Speaker drove in Nick Roell to give Bethany the 4-3 lead.

The Golden Tornadoes would score the next four runs to take a 7-4 lead. In the bottom of the ninth, Colton Stoneman scored on a throwing error, but the Bison were unable to make the comeback complete.
