Baseball: Mantle reaches 100 strikeouts as Presidents sweep Bison

Drew VonScio, Student Assistant for Athletic Communications

WASHINGTON, Pa – Bethany continued their PAC slate of games Friday in a doubleheader against the defending champions, Washington and Jefferson. In game two, junior Trey Mantle reached the century mark in strikeouts as the Presidents limited the Bison to just five runs between both games as the Green and White fell 7-4 and 2-1.

W&J got off to an early two-run advantage in the second before CJ Owens cut the Bethany deficit in half with a fielder's choice that scored Cory Newman. In the bottom of the inning, the Presidents answered right back with one run in both the third and fourth innings.

Nick Roell doubled to right center and drove in Newman before a double from Owens scored in Roell. W&J would strike again as they tacked on a trio of runs in the sixth.

Devin Toothman's RBI single in the eighth scored Luke Beatty, but the Bison could not muster up anymore offense in game one.

Alec Berg threw five innings for the Green and White where he conceded four earned runs with a pair of strikeouts. Zach Nolf threw three innings in relief and gave up three earned.

Game two saw the Bison engage in a pitcher's duel as a combined three runs were scored between the teams. The Presidents plated an early run in the first before adding what would be the game-winning run in the third.

In the top of the sixth, Roell flied out to left field and was credited an RBI as Newman scored. The Bethany shortstop came around to score three times in today's doubleheader.

Mark Lavezza went just 1.2 innings for the Green and White where he gave up an earned run and struck out a batter. Logan Mayhle finished the second inning before Trey Mantle threw six innings of one-run ball out of the bullpen with a trio of punchouts. Mantle's eighth inning strike out allowed him to reach triple digits in that category as a junior.

Bethany is back in action Sunday for their final non-conference game of the season when they travel to take on Kent State-Tuscarawas. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
