Baseball: Bison swept by Titans in season finale

Drew VonScio, Student Assistant for Athletic Communications

BETHANY, W.Va. – Bethany hosted their final doubleheader of the 2023 season Friday afternoon against Westminster. The visitors came into town knowing a pair of wins would secure their part in the 2023 PAC Tournament and left with a sweep, taking game one, 12-7 and game two, 13-2.

Game one started out as a pitcher's duel as neither team could break into the run column. In the top of the fifth, the Titans managed to post a trio of runs. Bethany responded with a whopping seven runs to counter.

Cory Newman hit his first career homerun to get the party started in the form of a two-run shot before Josh Speaker singled in a pair of runs with a drive to right field. Alec Berg then singled up the middle to plate Luke Beatty with the rally ending after Riley Brendel's two-run double to left that scored Speaker and Berg.

Westminster would then rally in the seventh, eighth, and ninth to create seven more runs of their own to take game one by a score of 12-7. Trey Mantle threw five innings while conceding three runs, two of which were earned.

Game two saw the Green and White strike first in the bottom of the third when Beatty doubled to left and scored Colton Stoneman. Newman then singled to left center and plated Nick Roell. Westminster cut their deficit in half the next inning.

The game remained a low-scoring contest into the final third of the second half of the doubleheader before Westminster claimed the lead in the seventh with four runs to go ahead 5-2. The Titans then stockpiled runs in the ninth as they scored seven more to come away with a 13-2 win.

Kyle D'Angela threw four innings of one-run ball before the bullpen conceded a dozen runs in the final five innings of play. Colton Stoneman finished the season with 66 hits, slotting him in at a tie for third with the most hits in a single season.

Bethany finishes the 2023 season with a record of 18-22 and just 4-16 in PAC play.
