Baseball: Late-inning heroics in game two allow Tomcats to sweep Bison

Drew VonScio, Student Assistant for Athletic Communications

GREENVILLE, PA – Bethany opened their PAC schedule this afternoon on the road against Thiel. The Bison's trip north ultimately saw them come back empty handed as the Tomcats took both games, 13-2 in game one and 7-6 in game two.

The opening half of the doubleheader saw the Green and White draw first blood in the top of the first when CJ Owens grounded into a double play, allowing Nick Roell to score. Thiel would then answer with six runs in the bottom of the inning.

Despite having a five-run advantage, the Tomcats would not stop there as they put up another seven runs between the second and third innings. Josh Speaker would pick up an RBI in the top of the fifth to plate Colton Stoneman.

Mark Lavezza went just 2.1 innings for Bethany, giving up 11 runs with just four being earned. Kyle D'Angela came on for 3.2 innings of relief and gave up a pair of earned runs while adding five strikeouts.

Looking to try and force a split, Bethany started off game two with a pair of runs in the top of the first. Tyler Mckee doubled to left center which allowed Speaker and Owens to score. Thiel would claim the lead in the bottom half of the inning with a trio of runs.

The Bison would post three of their own in the top of the second as Roell reached on a throwing error allowing Cory Newman and Keith Berger to cross the plate. Stoneman later singled to right to score Roell.

Thiel would respond in the bottom of the fourth with three more runs to reclaim the lead, but Bethany was not done just yet. The next half inning, Newman picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice to plate Riley Brendel. In the bottom of the seventh, a solo homerun for the Tomcats would end up being the game-winner for the hosts.

Trey Mantle started the second game, going 6.1 innings while giving up seven runs (three earned). Zach Nolf pitched the final 1.2 innings scoreless in relief.

Bethany will aim to regroup this weekend when they host St. Vincent at Bethany Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
