Baseball: Stoneman’s six-hit day overshadowed by Gators sweep of the Bison

Drew VonScio, Student Assistant for Athletic Communications

BETHANY, W.Va. – Bethany hosted Allegheny in a PAC doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Bethany Park as the Green and White looked to get back in the win column. Despite scoring 13 runs between the two games and Colton Stoneman tallying six hits, the Bison were swept by the Gators in tidy fashion as the visitors won game one 8-3 and game two 22-10.

Game one saw Allegheny post the opening three runs between the first two innings before Hayden Fox reached on a fielder's choice and scored Grant Schaffner. The Gators would then use the middle third of the ball game to post four more runs.

In the bottom of the sixth, Derek Black singled to right which plated Fox before Stoneman's RBI single drove in Devin Toothman. Allegheny would then add an insurance run in the top of the seventh and cruise to an 8-3 victory.

Alec Berg suffered the loss for the Green and White as he went 4.1 innings giving up five earned runs while striking out three. Zach Nolf finished the game with 4.2 innings of relief where he conceded three runs with just one earned and a pair of punchouts.

The second half of the doubleheader saw the visitors putting up a whopping eight runs in the top of the second before Bethany was able to get on the board in the bottom of the inning when Schaffner's single scored Black. Allegheny would add two more in the top of the third.

In the bottom of the third, a CJ Owens infield single scored Cory Newman before Beatty's two-RBI single allowed Stoneman and Nick Roell to round the bases. Berg kept the rally going with a single to left that plated Owens before Black's fielder's choice scored Beatty.

The Gators would go on to use the final four innings and put up a dozen more runs on Bison relievers before Nick Roell's single in the bottom of the ninth drove in Newman and Blake Connelly.

Mark Lavezza suffered the loss as he lasted just 1.2 innings where he gave up eight runs (two earned). Of the final 14 runs Allegheny would go on to score, just four of them were earned against Bethany pitchers as the Green and White's fielding mistakes continue to haunt them.

Bethany is back in action on Saturday when they take a trip north to take on Grove City in another PAC doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
