Bison Field Hockey Drops Decision to Oberlin

Oct. 6 – BETHANY, W. Va. – The Bethany College field hockey team was defeated 2-1 by Oberlin College on Tuesday afternoon.

The Bison (5-8) got off to a hot start, quickly totaling five shots in the opening minutes but failing to beat the Oberlin goalkeeper. 

Oberlin (1-9) was able to capitalize on their first scoring opportunity as they took a 1-0 lead in the 14thminute. Oberlin's Maureen Coffey took a penalty corner pass from teammate Taylor Swift for the first goal of the game.

Bethany regrouped and came back with an offensive attack of their own. Junior Lauren Rao (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Sweet Home) tied the game at 1-1 four minutes later as sophomore Bailey Boardman (La Verne, Calif./Bonita) earned the assist on the play.

Oberlin struck again in the 29th minute as another penalty corner led to another score. The first period ended with the Bison trailing 2-1.

The second half saw a defensive battle as neither team could tally a score. The Bison had multiple chances as they recorded six penalty corners in the half.

The Green & White outshot Oberlin in both periods, finishing the game with 11 shots. Senior Courtney Gill (Little Egg Harbor, N.J./Pinelands Regional) led the Bison offense with four shots.

Senior goaltender Courtney Snyder (Bristol, Pa./Bristol) didn't allow a goal in the second half after she collected a save in the opening period. Snyder played all 70 minutes in net for the Bison. 

Bethany will be back in action against Transylvania on Saturday, October 10 at 2:30 p.m.
