Bison Field Hockey Falters at Home Against Roanoke

Sept. 12 – BETHANY, W.Va. – The Bethany College field hockey team was defeated 5-1 by visiting Roanoke College on Saturday afternoon.

The Maroons (3-0) controlled the early portion of the first half, netting two goals in the 12th and 16thminutes to jump out to a 2-0 advantage.

The Bison (2-4) quickly responded as senior T.J. Solomon (Beltsville, Md./Elizabeth Seton) found teammate Lauren Rao (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Sweet Home) in the offensive circle. The junior forward then found the back of the net for her first goal of the season to make the score 2-1.

That would be as close as Bethany would get, however, as the Maroons scored one more goal before the intermission, and two in the second half of play.

Offensively, the Bison were led by Rao, who had three total shots in the game. Additionally, sophomore Bailey Boardman (La Verne, Calif./Bonita) and Solomon recorded a shot, each.

The Maroons were led by junior Shelbi Holloman as she amassed 12 total shots, scoring two goals and adding an assist.

On the defensive end, the Bison defense continued to show its ability to help out goalkeeper Courtney Snyder (Bristol, Pa./Bristol), totaling four more defensive saves. Junior Selena Vieira (San Jose, Calif./Leland) recorded two of her own, giving the team 13 total on the year, which surpasses their total from all of 2014.

Snyder recorded 11 more saves between the posts for Bethany, giving her at least nine saves in the last four games.

The Bison will be back in action on Saturday, September 19 when they travel to Batimore, Md. to take on Goucher College. The matchup with the Gophers is scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. start.
