SB: Sweep Leads to Postseason Berth

A pair of five-run innings, one in each game, lifted the Bethany College softball team to the doubleheader sweep of Washington & Jefferson – officially qualifying the Bison for the upcoming Presidents' Athletic Conference tournament.

GAME ONE: BETHANY 9, WASHINGTON & JEFFERSON 2

The first six Bethany batters reached, five of them coming across the plate as the Bison took the 5-0 lead in the first inning and fifth-year Josie Wise did the rest in the game one win.

Freshman Olivia Kidd and sophomore Emma Jackson combined for six RBI, going 5-for-8 with four runs scored. Graduate Destiny Goodnight was also 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two stolen bases.

Kidd opened the scoring with a two-run double in the first and came around to score on a Jackson single, who scored on a bases-loaded walk drawn by senior Alexis Holden. Jackson hit her sixth home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fifth inning, and Kidd capped the scoring with a double that scored graduate Morgan Huey. The catcher added to the run total as she doubled home Goodnight earlier in the sixth inning.

Wise allowed two earned runs on eight hits over seven innings with eight strikeouts.

GAME TWO: BETHANY 8, WASHINGTON & JEFFERSON 4

It was a case of death by a thousand cuts as Bethany took control of the game with a five-run fifth inning.

Bethany tallied the five runs on just four hits, all singles – three being of the infield variety – with an error and an intentional walk. Back-to-back infield singles and a double steal had runners in scoring position for Huey, who hit a rocket between the legs of the shortshop, to give Bethany a lead it wouldn't relinquish.

Another infield single, this one by freshman Amber Dedmon, brought home an additional run. The lone single to leave the infield, a hit through the left side by Holden scored two more runs.

Huey opened the game's scoring with a double in the first and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Jackson. However, W&J took the lead with a three-run homer in the second. The Presidents added a run in the third inning, but Bethany had an answer with a single run of itself.

Seven different Bison registered hits with Goodnight being the lone hitter with multiple hits, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two stolen bases. Huey, Jackson, and Holden were responsible for six of the team's seven RBI.

Wise (16-5) earned the win with 2.2 innings of scoreless, one-hit relief.

Bethany is still awaiting word on whether the conclusion of the April 9th game with Waynesburg will need to be played Monday. If needed for PAC tournament seeding, the game will pick up with the team tied at eight going into the eighth inning.
