Timely Hits, Clutch Pitching Leads to Split

The Bethany College softball was just one bad inning away from securing a Presidents' Athletic Conference sweep of Allegheny Wednesday.

GAME ONE: ALLEGHENY 8, BETHANY 3

All of the Allegheny offense game in the sixth inning as the Gators pushed eight runs on eight hits across the plate.

The big inning partially overshadowed the performance of sophomore Emma Jackson, in just her third game of the season. The right hander hit a pair of home runs for her third and fourth longballs of the season as Bethany took the 3-0 lead. She finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored, two home runs and two RBI.

Freshman Bella Jouzapaitis was 1-for-3 with a run scored and senior Haley Eyler was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Fifth-year Josie Wise (13-4) allowed eight earned runs on 14 hits over seven innings with four strikeouts.

GAME TWO: BETHANY 3, ALLEGHENY 2

Sophomore Victoria Wehrberger took a perfect game into the fifth inning before an infield single brought the visions of history to an end. However, Wehrberger was special enough in the circle to enable the Bison to secure the split.

In her first appearance since March 28, the hurler allowed two unearned runs on four hits over seven innings.

Allegheny had its eyes on another comeback victory as they had the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position in the seventh, but Jackson hauled in a line drive for the final out.

Eyler was responsible for nearly all of the Bethany offense. She scored on a two-out single by graduate Destiny Goodnight in the third, and registered a two-run, two-out double in the fourth inning. Jackson was 2-for-2 with a walk in the victory.

INSIDE THE BOX & NOTES

  • Graduate Morgan Huey tied the school record for all-time doubles with her knock in the fifth inning. She also currently stands at 199 hits.

  • Wise needs two more starts to become the all-time leader in that category.

Bethany (22-7 overall 8-5 PAC) travels to Latrobe, Pa. 3:30 p.m. Thursday for a PAC doubleheader with Saint Vincent.
