Women's Tennis Opens PAC Play With 8-1 Loss to W&J

Sept. 11 – WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Bethany College women's tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision to Washington & Jefferson College in the team's Presidents' Athletic Conference opener on Friday evening. Pia Hager led the way, picking up her first-career conference win.

Hager (Stuttgart, Germany) was the lone winner for the Bison, defeating the Presidents' Courtney Brennan in straight sets. Hager captured the first set by a 6-3 score before taking set two, 6-1. With the victory, Hager moved to 4-0 during her freshman campaign, posting all four wins at number one singles. Additionally, she has yet to drop a set along the way, winning each match in straight sets.

Along with having the most wins of any player in the PAC to date, Hager becomes the first Bison since Brittani Seeman to begin the year with four-consecutive victories. She is also the first player for the Green & White to win four singles matches in a row since 2012.

Bethany found themselves down 3-0 after doubles action. Hager and her partner Anna Heizler (Stegen, Germany) took a set in their match at #1 doubles, as did Sarah Thrall (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) and Alyssa Smydo (Bentleyville, W. Va./Bentworth) at #2 doubles.

The Green & White will be back in action on Saturday, September 12 when they return home to take on Medaille College in a non-conference contest. The matchup at the Mary Ewing Tennis Center is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
