Bison Men's Soccer Rallies Late to Defeat St. Vincent
Oct. 13 – LATROBE, Pa. – The Bethany College men's soccer team overcame a late two-goal deficit to defeat St. Vincent College 3-2 in overtime on Tuesday afternoon. The Bison (5-7-2) moved to 3-0-2 in overtime games this season.
The two teams from the Presidents' Athletic Conference engaged in a defensive battle early as neither could tally a score. Sophomore goalkeeper Richard Martinez (Miami, Fla./Southdade Senior) got the start in net, recording an early save to hold the Bearcats (1-12-2) scoreless.
The second half was a completely different story. The Bearcats broke the tie just two minutes into the period, starting an offensive spree.
St. Vincent netted another goal to make it a 2-0 contest in the 53rd minute of play. The Bison, however, remained resilient and continued to pressure the Bearcat defense.
Captain Jack Waters (Epsom, United Kingdom/Glyn School) then took the game into his own hands. The junior beat the St. Vincent goalkeeper on a penalty kick to make it a one-goal game in the 64th minute.
In the 67th minute, Waters fired a laser from the left side of the box that found the back of the net to even the score at 2-2. The two goals marked Water's fourth game this season that he has recorded multiple goals.
The period came to an end and Bethany College found themselves heading to overtime. The Green & White totaled 12 shots in the second half.
Early in the extra period, Martinez turned away a Bearcat shot and the Bison took possession. Bethany worked the ball into the Bearcat box where freshman Jay O' Donnell (Cardiff, Wales/Radyr Comprehensive) took a pass from Waters and scored the game winner in the 92nd minute.
Waters led the Bison offense with seven shots in the match. Sophomore Christian Corona (Miami, Fla./Southdade Senior) tallied four shots, and both Rey Aguilar (Homestead, Fla./South Dade) and Reynaldo Reyes (Melbourne, Fla./Eau Gallie) had two.
Martinez finished with four saves as he earned the victory in net. The sophomore played all 92 minutes for the Green & White.
The Bison will be back in action as they welcome Washington & Jefferson on Saturday, October 17 at 3:30 p.m.
