Bison Men’s Soccer Plays to 1-1 Draw with Waynesburg

Oct. 3 – BETHANY, W. Va. – The Bethany men's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie against Waynesburg on Saturday afternoon. The Bison have yet to lose in Bethany this season, improving to 3-0-2 at home.

The Yellow Jackets (0-9-1) got on the board first as Connor Walsh fired a laser from outside the box in the 6th minute of play.

The Bison (4-5-2) remained undeterred and quickly went on the attack. Captain Jack Waters (Epsom, United Kingdom/Glyn School) found Abdullahi Abdullahi (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) with a touch pass, and the sophomore forward beat the Waynesburg keeper to make it a 1-1 contest in the 7th minute.

Bethany kept up the offensive pressure and ended with 12 total shots in the half. The Bison failed to capitalize on a couple scoring opportunities, and the game remained tied going into the intermission.

The second half saw a defensive battle as both teams struggled to keep possession of the ball. Neither team was able to gain an advantage and the game headed for overtime.

In the first overtime period, Bethany took control early. The Bison narrowly missed ending the game, recording four shots on goal. Waynesburg, however, stood tough and forced a second overtime. Each team totaled two shots in the second overtime period, but neither could beat the opposing keeper to end the match.

Offensively, the Bison were led by Waters who finished with nine shots. Christian Corona (Miami, Fla./Southdade Senior), Reynaldo Reyes (Melbourne, Fla,/Eau Gallie), and Abdullahi collected two shots each as Bethany finished with 21 shots.

Bison goaltender Callum Appleby (Maidstone, United Kingdom/Maidstone) was very vocal throughout the match and played solid between the pipes for the Green & White. Appleby finished with five saves.

Bethany College will return to the pitch on Wednesday, October 7 as they take on La Roche at 4:00 p.m.
