Bison Men's Soccer Plays to 2-2 Draw

Sept. 16 – BETHANY, W. Va. - The Bethany men's soccer team played to a 2-2 tie against Franciscan on Wednesday night at Bison Stadium.

Franciscan got off to a quick start as Joseph Duran took a pass from Leo Herrman and made it a 1-0 game in the 7th minute.

Bethany was able to respond eight minutes later as freshman Kai Whitney (Melbourne, Fla./Eau Gallie) found Frederik Thomsen (Skive, Denmark/Skive) for the first goal of his young career. Additionally, Whitney's assist was also his first-career point.

The Bison remained the aggressor for the rest of the half as Bethany outshot the Barons 6-4 and recorded three corner kicks in the first period.

Franciscan, once again struck quickly at the start of the second frame as Leo Herrmann scored in the 48thminute to make it a 2-1 game. Hermann led both teams with five shots in the match.

The Green & White were able to take back control of the game and put the pressure on the opposing defense. The Bison were finally rewarded in the 81st minute when freshman Rey Aguilar (Homestead, Fla./South Dade) beat Franciscan goaltender Edward Huber to the left corner for the first goal of his career. Aguilar led the Bison offense, along with Thomsen, with three shots. 

Both teams fought to gain an advantage in the extra periods, but ultimately the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

Bethany totaled 16 shots in the game compared to eight shots for the Barons, and the Bison were able to get multiple scoring chances with eight corners.

Bethany goalkeeper Callum Appleby (Maidstone, United Kingdom/Maidstone) finished the game with four saves. Sophomore keeper Richard Martinez (Miami, Fla./Southdade Senior) replaced Appleby with ten minutes left in the second period and played solid in his absence.

The Bison will return to the pitch as they travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. on Saturday, September 19 to take on Carnegie Mellon at 5:00 p.m.
