Bison Men’s Soccer Captures 2-1 Overtime Win Over Mount Aloysius

Sept. 9 – BETHANY, W.Va. - The Bethany College men's soccer team earned their first victory of the year, defeating Mount Aloysius 2-1 in overtime on Wednesday night. Captain Jack Waters tallied both scores, including the game-winning penalty kick in the extra period.

Similar to the first three games of the season, the Bison (1-3) defense stood strong and helped keep their team in the game when the offense could not break through. The score remained tied 0-0 after the first intermission.

It wasn't until the 77th minute when Waters (Epsom, United Kingdom/Glyn School) was able to finish an Alex Burak (Melbourne, Fla./Eau Gallie) cross to give the Bison their first lead of the game.

However, the Mounties (1-2) found a way to tie the game in the 89th minute when Thomas Sloan fired a shot from well outside the box and found the corner of the net.

In the overtime period, Mount Aloysius was called for a penalty inside the box. Waters put the team on his shoulders, and beat Mount Aloysius keeper Justin Hamm to the right side of the net for the winning score. It was Water's first career multi-goal game.

The Bethany defense continued their solid play and repeatedly shut down the Mounties attack. The Bison held their opponents to five shots on goal, while Bethany recorded 10 shots on goal of their own in the game.

Offensively, Waters led the way with seven shots total for his two goals. Sophomore Christian Corona (Miami, Fla./Southdade Senior) and freshman Kai Whitney (Melbourne, FL/Eau Gallie) both added two shots as well.

Goalkeeper Richard Martinez (Miami, Fla./Southdade Senior) played all 90 minutes along with the extra time, totaling four saves in the win.

The Bison will be back in action on Sunday, September 13th as they take on Pitt-Greenburg in Bethany at 1:00 p.m.
