NEW CONCORD, Ohio (Sept. 6) - With the help of the two goals from freshman Tony Cirri (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty), the Bison notched a 3-2 win over Muskingum Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference match.

THE MATCHUP

  • Final: Bethany 3, Muskingum 2 (Box Score)
  • Records: Bethany 2-1, Muskingum 0-3
  • Location: North Athletic Field | New Concord, Ohio

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Muskies took the early advantage, netting a goal in the 18th-minute to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Bethany opportunistically even the score early in the second half when a Muskingum defender put the ball into his own net in the 50th-minute of the match.
  • Cirri scored his first goal of the match, and first of his career, in the 66th-minute on a ball that snuck inside the far-side post to give Bethany a 2-1 lead.
  • Muskingum tied the game less than three minutes later. The Muskies got behind the Bethany defense and put home a breakaway goal to tie the match.
  • Less than two minutes after Muskingum tied the match, Bethany took the lead once more off the foot of Cirri. The Maryland native got the ball inside the box near the center area and fired a shot that found the twine in the 71st-minute to push the Bison ahead 3-2.
  • Muskingum attempted three shots in the closing minutes, including a headed ball on net, but freshman Torben Grether (Rheinfelden, Germany/Georg-Buchner) made the save to help preserve the win.

  • Grether finished the afternoon with three saves to earn his second-career win.
  • Bethany held a 16-to-9 advantage in shots, including an 8-to-5 edge in shots-on-goal.
  • Sophomore Mikel Ubeda (Sopelana, Spain/Azkorri) was credited with the assist on Cirri's game-winning goal in the 71st-minutes.
