LATROBE, Pa. (Oct. 29) - The Bison led with an early goal, but a pair of second half goals allowed Saint Vincent to rally defeat Bethany 2-1 Sunday afternoon in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match to conclude the 2017 season.

THE MATCHUP

  • Final: Saint Vincent 2, Bethany 1 (Box Score)
  • Records: Bethany 8-9-2, 2-4-2 PAC | Saint Vincent 4-13-1, 1-7 PAC
  • Location: SVC Turf | Latrobe, Pennsylvania

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Bethany scored the game's first goal in the 24th-minute when a cross by junior Danny Booth (Manchester, England/Poynton) found the toe of freshman Raul Arteaga (Pachuca, Mexico/Leonardo Bravo), who scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season to push the Bison to a 1-0 lead.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Torben Grether (Rheinfelden, Germany/Georg-Buchner) made a pair of stops to close out the first half and help the Bison take the lead into the break.
  • Saint Vincent moved quickly following halftime, scoring two goals in the first 21 minutes of the second half to take the lead.
  • The Bearcats notched the first goal on a lead pass that allowed Saint Vincent's Zach D'Amico to chip the ball over Grether to tie that game in the 52nd-minute.
  • Saint Vincent then took the lead in the 67th-minute on a headed ball off of a long cross that found the back of the net.
  • Bethany attempted three shots over the final 23 minutes of the match, including a shot on goal in the 88th-minute by senior Geoff Pecar (Harrison, Ohio/Harrison Central), but could not overcome the deficit and ended the season with the 2-1 loss.

MATCH NOTES

  • Grether was tagged with the loss in net and wraps up his freshman season at 6-7-2 overall, while making six saves in the game. He ranked among the top-four in goals against average, save percentage, saves and shutout wins in the conference.
  • Arteaga ends the season leading the team and ranking in a tie for fifth in the PAC with seven goals this season.
  • The eight wins by the Bison matches the team's total from last season. The 16 wins over the past two seasons is the most by the program since Bethany won 12 games combined in 2012 and 2013.
