Men's soccer claims win over Mount Aloysius, 3-1

BETHANY, W.Va. (Sept. 26) - The Bethany College men's soccer team earned a 3-1 win over previously undefeated Mount Aloysius in a non-conference match at Hoag Field Tuesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Bison opened the scoring early in the match when freshman Jose Lujan (Madrid, Spain/Punta Galea) redirected a free-kick from senior Jose Saldivar (Moreno Valley, Calif./Valley View) into the back of the net to make the score 1-0 in the seventh-minute.
  • The Bison took the 1-0 lead into halftime, but a quick strike early in the second half doubled the lead.
  • Freshman Bernardo Vilchis (Mexico City, Mexico/Universidad del Valle) received a pass from junior Jay O'Donnell (Cardiff, Wales/Radyr Comprehensive) from the far left side and buried the ball into the back of the net to give Bethany a 2-0 lead in the 47th-minute.
  • Mount Aloysius cut the lead in half in the 59th-minute. The Mountie back line sent a ball into the box that was headed above the reach of the charging Bison goalkeeper to make the score 2-1.
  • Bethany added an insurance goal in the 62nd-minute by freshman Tony Cirri (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) to secure the victory. Freshman Luis Arteaga (Pachuca, Mexico/Leonardo Bravo) headed a corner-kick that landed right on the foot of Cirri, who finished the play with his third goal of the season.

MATCH NOTES

  • The Green & White held a 16-to-7 advantage in shots, including a 7-to-3 edge in shots-on-goal.
  • Senior goalkeeper Riley Harrison (Ballarat, Australia/Ballarat), making his first start of the season, made two saves to earn the win for the Bison

  • The Bison open Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on Friday, September 29 when they head to Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania to take on the defending league-champion Geneva for a match under the lights at 7 p.m.
