BETHANY, W.Va. (Oct. 25) - A goal in the final minute of the match helped Washington & Jefferson rally past Bethany 2-1 Wednesday night in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match at Bison Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Bethany took advantage of a free-kick just beyond the box towards the right corner of the field to score the game's first goal in the eighth-minute.
  • Junior Jay O'Donnell (Cardiff, Wales/Radyr Comprehensive) sent the free-kick into the box where sophomore David Tome (Madrid, Spain/Alameda de Osuna) controlled the ball and beat the W&J keeper to give Bethany a 1-0 lead.
  • Both team's had chances to score over the course of the first half, but each goalkeeper was up to the task, allowing Bethany to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
  • W&J got on the board in the 59th-minute when a foul in the box allowed for a penalty kick, which W&J's Jason Yobbi finished to tie the game at one apiece.
  • The Presidents' had the majority of the scoring chances over the next 10 minutes, including a header off of a corner kick that sailed just wide of the net.
  • Bethany regained momentum in the 83rd-minute with a couple of legitimate chances. Freshman Raul Arteaga (Pachuca, Mexico/Leonardo Bravo) sent a ball just high and had another shot blocked to setup the team's only corner kick attempt of the night in the 86th-minute, but the Bison did not come away with a goal.
  • W&J attempted a corner kick late in the 89th-minute of the match which resulted in a shot off of the cross bar. The ball spit out to Yobbi, who sent the ball past freshman goalkeeper Torben Grether (Rheinfelden, Germany/Georg-Buchner) to propel the Presidents to the win.

MATCH NOTES

  • Grether, the reigning PAC Defensive Player of the Week, finished with six saves in the loss.
  • Bethany out-shot W&J 8-to-4 in the first half, but the Presidents' came on strong in the second period. W&J held a 12-to-8 shots advantage in the second half and were awarded seven corner kicks.

  • Bethany is on the road to close out the 2017 regular-season when they head to Latrobe, Pennsylvania to take on Saint Vincent on Sunday, October 29 at 3 p.m.
