Softball: Bison drop two to open 2023 season

RALEIGH, N.C. – Bethany College softball opened the 2023 season at the Grand Slam Triangle Classic hosted by William Peace Saturday afternoon.  

Game One Overview

Susquehanna 7, Bethany 3

The Bison struck first in the top of the first. Elizabeth Shubert doubled to drive in Morgan Huey and Brooke Markland to give the Bison an early 2-0 lead. Bethany added one more run in the second after Destiny Goodnight scored on a fielder's choice.

The River Hawks' bats came alive in the third. Bean hit a two-run home run to bring the River Hawks within one, 3-2. A few batters later, the River Hawks took the lead when Pavlik hit a three-run homerun. In the fifth inning, Susquehanna added one run to take a 6-3 lead and in the sixth inning they extended the lead to 7-3.

Game Two Overview

Kean 5, Bethany 4 (8 innings)

Kean held the early 2-0 lead over the Bison. The Bison were able to cut the deficit in half in the third inning. Morgan Huey doubled to score Mary Marshall. In the fourth, Marshall singled to score Haley Eyler, tying the game a 2-2. Huey gave the Bison the lead driving in Destiny Goodnight.

Bethany held the lead until the sixth inning, when Kean scored two on a single. The lead didn't last long for Kean. In the bottom of the sixth, Huey continued the hot streak at the plate, doubling to center field which scored Brooke Markland.

The game went into extra innings and the international tie breaker in effect. Kean was able to score their runner from second to take the 5-4 lead. The Bison went down in order in the bottom half of the eighth.
