Softball: Bison swept in home opener

BETHANY, W.Va. – Bethany College softball held their season opener against Penn State-Altoona in a non-conference double header at Bison Field Thursday afternoon. The Lions' explosive offense earned them the sweep over the Bison.

Game One Overview

PSU-Lions 11, Bethany 4

PSU-Altoona crossed the plate first after Brooke Colledge hit a homerun to give the Lions the early 1-0 lead. The Lions had three runs cross in the third to take a 4-0 lead. In the bottom of the third, Elizabeth Shubert put the Bison on the board after hitting her first career homerun to centerfield. In the bottom half of the fourth, Mary Marshall reached on an error allowing Brooke Markland to score. Moments later, Haley Eyler hit a sacrifice bunt to score Marshall. The Bison trailed 4-3. In the fifth inning, both teams traded runs. Shubert hit a sacrifice fly to score pinch runner Trista Morris. PSU-Altoona bats were hot in the seventh inning. The Lions capitalized and scored six runs to take a seven run lead heading into the bottom half of the inning.

Game Two Overview

PSU-Altoona 7, Bethany 2  

The Lions scored a run in the first three innings holding a 3-0 lead. In the third, Mary Marshall singled to drive in Morgan Huey for the Bison's first run of the second game. The Lions lead swelled as they led 7-1 after five and half innings. In the bottom half of the fifth, Brooke Markland doubled driving in Huey.
