Softball: Bison Swept by Cardinals in Home Opener

Bethany, W.Va. – The Bethany College softball team hosted Otterbein University Cardinals in a non-conference contest at Bison Field Saturday afternoon.

Game One Overview

Otterbein 3, Bethany 1

Otterbein struck first in the second inning, capitalizing on Bison errors to take a 2-0 lead. Bethany answered in the bottom of the second inning with a first and third situation. Angela Brandel stole second drawing the Cardinal throw and allowed Lexie Vetter to score. Bethany trailed 2-1 after two innings of play. In the fourth, Otterbein scored a run to take a 3-1 lead. Both teams were held scoreless in the final three innings of play.

Josie Wise was given her first loss of the season, pitching 7.0 innings. She gave up six hits, one walk and fanned nine batters.

Jennifer Oberthur and Angela Brandel had one hit each to lead the Bison.  

Game Two Overview

Otterbein 6, Bethany 2

Otterbein scored first taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning. In the bottom half of the first inning, Destiny Goodnight scored on a wild pitch. The Bison and Cardinals were knotted at 1-1 after the first inning of play. Otterbein took a 2-1 lead in the second and extended their lead 3-1 after three innings of play.

The Bison cut the lead in half after Morgan Huey drove in Ally McClelland in the third inning. The Cardinals would score a run in the fourth, fifth and six inning to take game two, 6-2.

Notables: 

Sophomore Josie Wise moves to eighth on Bethany's all-time career strikeout list with 171 after today's nine strikeout performance in game one.
