Softball: Bison Split with Pioneers

Marietta, Ohio – The Bethany College softball team traveled to Marietta College for a non-conference doubleheader. The Bison split with the Pioneers winning first game 9-8 in 11 innings and dropping game two 11-3 in five innings.

Game One Overview

Bethany 9, Marietta 8 (11 innings)

Marietta got on the board first after a first inning two-run homerun to take a 2-0 lead. Bethany answered in the top of the second, after Haley Eyler drove in Destiny Goodnight and moments later, Angela Brandel stole home to deadlock the game at 2-2. The Bison took a 4-2 lead in the third inning after Morgan Huey and Angela Brandel earned RBIs from Jen Oberthur and Lexie Vetter scoring.

The Pioneers scored a run in the fourth inning to cut the lead to 4-3. In the fifth inning the Bison added two more runs after Haley Eyler singled to score Destiny Goodnight and Morgan Huey scored on a wild pitch.

In the bottom half of the seventh inning, the Pioneers deadlocked the game at 6-6. Both teams held each other scoreless until the 11th inning. Kathleen Fuchs drove in Jennifer Oberthur to give the Bison a one run lead. Angela Brandel singled to drive in two more runs for the Bison to take a 9-6 lead heading in the bottom of the inning. The Pioneers scored two runs but were unable to overcome the Bison.

Josie Wise earned her fifth win on the season, pitching 11.0 innings. She had two walks and 15 strikeouts.

Angela Brandel had three runs batted in while batting 1-for-2 with three walks. She scored one run.

Game Two Overview

Marietta 11, Bethany 3 (5 innings)

Marietta had all of the momentum in game two, taking a 3-0 lead in the first two innings. Jennifer Oberthur put the Bison on the board with a homerun to centerfield in the third inning. Morgan Huey singled to drive in Kathleen Fuchs and Angela Brandel singled to score Lexie Vetter. Bethany and Marietta were knotted at 3-3 heading into the bottom half of the third inning.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Pioneers regained the lead and pulled ahead 9-3. In the fifth inning Marietta added two more runs to seal the victory.

Angela Brandel, Jennifer Oberthur and Morgan Huey had runs batted in. Brandel led the Bison batting 2-for-3 in game two.
