Baseball: Bethany Earns Sweep Against Pitt-Greensburg

Bethany, W.Va. – Bethany College baseball team hosted the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg Bobcats for a non-conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Bethany Park. The Bison earned the sweep with wins 5-3 and 3-2.

Game One Overview

Bethany 5, UPG 3

Pitt-Greensburg scored in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Bison answered scoring two runs in the bottom half of the first inning. Stef Blackstone doubled to centerfield scoring Michael Whiteherse. Moments later, Luke Beatty drove in Kevin Pollock to give the Bison a 2-1 lead.

In the second inning, Whiteherse tripled to right field to score Cory Newman. Pollock drove in Whiteherse and Cameron Schaub singled to score Blackstone. The Bison took a 5-1 lead after two innings of play.

The Bobcats attempted to comeback, but the Bison held the Bobcats to three runs.

Mark Lavezza earned his third win on the season, pitching 6.1 innings with five strikeouts. Zach Nolf earned the save for his second of the season. Nolf struckout two batters in the seventh.

Game Two Overview

Bethany 3, UPG 2

Bethany took an early 1-0 lead after Luke Beatty singled to right field to score Kevin Pollock. In the third inning, Stef Blackstone singled to score Mike Hines to extend the Bison lead to 2-0. The Bobcats scored in the fourth inning cutting the lead in half. Blackstone singled to right field to drive in Whiteherse. The Bobcats attempted to make a comeback in the seventh but Bison pitcher Trey Mantle and the Bison defense got out of the jam.

Blackstone led the Bison with two RBIs whole going 2-for-3.

Mantle earned his first win of the season pitching 7.0 innings, giving up seven hits, two runs (one earned) and struck out five.
