Late Rally Falls Short
The Bethany College women's basketball team had its chance late, but a game-tying three-pointer with less than two seconds left was missed and the Bison fell to Washington & Jefferson Saturday, 65-62, in Presidents' Athletic Conference action on Joe Kurey Memorial Court inside Hummel Field House.
Both teams held double-figure leads, Bethany in the first half and W&J in the second half.
Bethany claimed its 10-point lead with a 13-2 run to begin the second quarter as Lindsey Garrison and Addy Blazer combined for 10 of the points. However, BC went scoreless for the last three minutes of the quarter and had its lead trimmed to five at halftime.
The lead was still five with two minutes remaining in the third quarter, but W&J scored 10 of the last 13 to take a two-point lead heading into the final quarter. The run extended to 17-3 as the fourth quarter began, and the deficit was nine. Following a three-point with 3:43 remaining, Bethany trailed by 10.
Three straight baskets by Bella Skobel pulled the Bison to within four with 69 seconds remaining, and Kaedlee Potter split a pair of free throws to trim the deficit to three with 24 seconds remaining.
Skobel came up with the biggest defensive play, a steal with 17 seconds remaining, to give BC some life. However, a missed jumper and a missed three-pointer on the subsequent possession left them three points short at the buzzer.
Potter continued her scoring surge with a team-high 17 points with eight rebounds and two assists. Garrison finished with 15 points with three rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
Kate Botti came up two rebounds shy of tying her career-high, pulling down 14 rebounds with nine points.
INSIDE THE BOX & NOTES
- Potter has reached double figures in six straight games.
- Botti has pulled down at least 10 rebounds twice this year.
- Season-low seven players got minutes in the game, all of them playing at least 12 minutes.
- Ashleigh Wheeler played all 40 minutes, while Botti played 39 minutes and Garrison 37 minutes. Those were all season highs in non-overtime games.
Bethany (4-3 overall, 3-1 PAC) travels to Westminster Saturday in a game that was originally scheduled for November 20. A pregame power outage forced the postponement and a venue change. The time hasn't been finalized.
