Women's Basketball: Bethany Hands W&J First PAC Loss

Bethany, W.Va. – The Bethany College women's basketball team handed the Washington & Jefferson Presidents their first PAC loss in a 64-59 battle inside Hummel Field House Wednesday evening.  

GAME FLOW

  • The Presidents took an early lead, but Bethany's Ashleigh Wheeler lifted the lid for the Bison knotting the game at 2-2.
  • The Bison pulled ahead leading by as many as five in the first stanza. The Presidents shifted momentum to their side after deadlocking the game at 12-12 with under a minute to go.
  • Freshman Lindsey Garrison nailed a three to pull the Bison ahead 15-12 heading into the second quarter.
  • It was a defensive battle in the second stanza. Bethany held Washington & Jefferson to seven points.
  • The Bison led the Presidents 26-19 at the half. Freshman Lindsey Garrison led all scorers with 11 points at the break.
  • The Presidents gained momentum outscoring the Bison 22-15 in the third to comeback and tie the game at 41-41 heading into the final stanza.
  • Freshman Ashleigh Wheeler drained a three to start the final quarter of play to give the Bison a three point lead. Moments later, Lindsey Garrison drained a deep shot from behind the arc to pull the Bison ahead 47-42.
  • The Presidents battled to regain the lead 49-47 with under seven minutes to go.
  • Courtney Walker hit a three as time expired on the shot clock to pull the Bison back ahead one, 50-49 with 6:21 to go.
  • Both teams battled back and forth until Makenzee Mason drove for a layup to pull Bethany ahead 59-57.
  • The Bison capitalized from the free-throw line and sealed the victory over the Presidents.

IN THE BOX SCORE

  • Lindsey Garrison led all scorers with 28 points, shooting 5-for-10 from the field (4-for-8 from three) and drained 14-for-14 from the charity stripe. On defense she had three steals.
  • Ashleigh Wheeler contributed 16 points with three three-pointers. She pulled in four boards and registered two steals and two assists.
  • Makenzee Mason had 11 points with five rebounds and three assists.
  • Taylor Stinnett pulled in 8 rebounds.

IN THE GAME NOTES

  • Tonight's win marks the first time Bethany defeated the Presidents inside Hummel Field House since the 2011-12 season. Bethany last beat W&J on the road in the 2016-17 season.
  • The Bison are now 7-0 inside Hummel Field House this year.
  • Freshman Lindsey Garrison currently has 53 made three-pointers this season. She needs 15 three-pointers to tie the single-season three point record set by Hayley Holenka (2015-16).
  • Tonight's win marks the first home win against W&J in Coach Sansom's career.
