Women's Basketball: Balanced offensive and strong defense lifts Bison past Bulldogs
SANTA CRUZ, Cali. – The Bethany College women's basketball team closed out the UCSC Thanksgiving Classic against University of Redlands Saturday afternoon. The Bison cruised to an 89-63 victory over the Bulldogs.
GAME FLOW
- Bethany opened the game on a 14-0 run. Ashleigh Wheeler opened the game with a three pointer followed by back-to-back layups by Kate Botti. Bella Skobel joined the scoring in the opening minutes, hitting a three and a jumper.
- The Bulldogs landed their first points of the game after a layup with 5:25 to go in the first stanza.
- Bethany closed out the first quarter on an 8-0 run leading 28-12.
- In the second quarter, the Bison led by as many as 28 and took a 49-26 lead into the break.
- Bethany held their largest lead in the second half of 36 points. The Bison outscored the Bulldogs, 40-37 in the second half, with the Bulldogs holding the fourth quarter advantage, 18-15.
IN THE BOX SCORE
- Five Bison scored 10+ points, led by Ashleigh Wheeler with 14 points. Wheeler dished out a team-high eight assists and had three steals.
- Lindsey Garrison added 13 points followed by Bella Skobel (12), Makenzee Mason (10) and Josie Stone (10).
- Kate Botti led the Bison on the boards with six rebounds. She added two blocks and two steals while dishing out three assists and scoring six.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Bethany dished out 31 assists on 37 made field goals.
- The Bison shot 57.8% from the field and 42.3% from behind the arc.
- Redlands held the advantage on the boards, 38-31. The Bulldogs earned 21 second chance points.
- The Green and White scored 32 points off of 18 turnovers.
NOTEABLES
- Bethany's 31 assists is the most since the 2014-15 season when they dished out 24 against Muskingum.
