Women's Basketball: Sharp shooting and defense leads to Bison win over Tomcats

BETHANY, W.Va.- The Bethany College women's basketball team played host to the Thiel College Tomcats in a Presidents Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup. Joe Kurey Memorial Court inside Hummel Field House was not lit by candles on this Valentine's day matchup, the gymnasium lights and the scoreboard shined bright in a 87-49 Bethany Bison victory.  

GAME FLOW/HIGHLIGHTS 

  • Thiel kept the game close in the first, jumping to a quick 6-2 lead.  

  • Bethany's first eight points came in the paint. Ashleigh Wheeler broke that streak with a made three giving the Bison an 11-6 lead. 

  • First quarter ended being a one possession game, with Bethany on top 14-11. 

  • Bethany started fast in the second with a 21-3 run to extended their lead to 35-14 with three minutes to go in the half.  

  • The Tomcats were able to score four points at the end of the half, but the Bison still held onto a commanding 41-18 lead entering halftime. 

  • Sophie Morey masterfully controlled the paint as she pulled down her 10th board of the game in just the third quarter. 

  • The third quarter was the only quarter where the Bison didn't outscore the Tomcats. Both teams were tied at 23 third-quarter-points. Bethany held a 64-31 lead at the end of three. 

  • The fourth quarter was defensive dominance for the Bison as they held Thiel to only eight points. 

  • Bethany slowed down the pace in the fourth maintaining their lead and ending the night with a 38 point victory over Thiel. 

 

BOX SCORE METRICS 

  • Bethany outscored Thiel on fastbreaks 18-0 at half and 36-2 in the game. 

  • The Bison had five steals in the second quarter alone and finished the game with 16.  

  • Josie Stone ended the game with four blocks. 

  • Lindsey Garrison's 21 points led the Bison. 

 

BY THE NUMBERS 

  • 59.8% of the Bison's points came in the paint (52-of-87). 

  • Morey's 12 personal rebounds equated to 33.33% of Thiel's total rebounds (36). 

  • 100% of Thiel's traveling roster scored a bucket in this game.

UP NEXT 

Bethany College will travel to Westminster (12-11) (10-9 PAC) for their final regular season game of the year. A Bison victory would secure a position in the PAC playoffs. The game is scheduled to be played Saturday, February 17th at 1:30 pm.
